Black walnut (Juglans nigra) is a large, highly prized, fruit-bearing tree, well known for its heavy, dark, purplish-brown wood. It’s native to North America and grows throughout eastern U.S. and Canada. Black walnut trees produce small, flavorful nuts encased in thick, hard, green hulls which are notoriously difficult to break open. The nuts have a strong, smoky flavor and the hulls contain juglone, tannins and quinone compounds which help protect the tree from environmental influences.

Black walnut hulls were used by indigenous peoples of North America for skin and detoxification purposes.
